Couples Therapy
When Love Feels Harder Than It Should…
You’ve heard it before: “Relationships take work.” But no one told you it would feel like this much work. Right now, it might feel like you and your partner are speaking different languages, stuck in the same painful cycle of arguments, distance, or silence.
Maybe you’ve experienced a betrayal, and you’re wondering if things can ever feel right again. You want to find your way back to each other, but you’re not sure where to start.
That’s where we come in.

Rebuilding Connection, One Step at a Time
At Alcova Therapy, we specialize in helping couples break out of the patterns that keep them stuck. We’re trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)—a leading, research-backed approach designed to help couples at every stage rebuild trust, strengthen communication, and reconnect.
We work with you to uncover the deeper needs and fears driving your conflicts, helping you understand not just what’s happening, but why it’s happening. Together, we’ll create new ways of reaching for each other—ways that lead to more security, more understanding, and more peace in your relationship.
What to Expect: Taking the First Step Together
We know reaching out for couples therapy can feel like a big decision. Here’s what the process looks like:
-
Reach Out Together
Fill out the form on our contact page to let us know you’re interested. We’ll get back to you quickly to answer any questions and get a sense of what’s bringing you here.
-
Book a Call to Talk It Through
We’ll schedule a brief intro call with both of you. This is a chance to share a bit about what’s been going on, hear how we work, and see if it feels like the right fit for your relationship
-
Schedule Your First Couples Session
When you’re ready, we’ll find a time that works for both of you to begin the process together. You can come in person to our Charleston, SC location, or we can meet online.
-
Begin the Work—Side by Side
In your sessions, we’ll help you understand what’s keeping you stuck, begin to repair the disconnect, and start rebuilding your relationship—one step at a time, together.
-
That’s really common. And it’s OK. Part of our work is helping both of you feel comfortable and engaged in the process. If your partner is more hesitant, we recommend asking them to commit to just the intake process. We find that once people experience this type of couples therapy, they are usually interested in continuing.
-
Absolutely. We take people from conflict to connection all the time. In fact, research suggests that marital happiness is not about how much you fight, but how effectively you repair. And that’s our specialty. We’ll work together to get underneath the conflict patterns and repair the real roots of the disconnection.
-
Definitely. We specialize in helping couples work through pain and repair trust. Rebuilding after a betrayal is hard work, but we have a clear, guided process that can help you heal—together.
-
Every couple is different, but many couples start noticing shifts within the first few sessions. Real, lasting change takes time, but we’ll be working toward progress from day one
-
Great question. The EFT intake process involves a 90-minute joint session, followed by an individual 60-minute session with each of you (usually the next week).
-
Our approach is different because we use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)—a research-backed, proven method for helping couples break negative cycles and rebuild trust and security. We focus on repairing your bond from the ground up and we often hear that it feels much different and more helpful than prior couples work.
-
That’s okay. Couples therapy can be helpful whether you’re working to repair your relationship or figuring out what’s next. We’ll meet you where you are and help you gain clarity on what’s best for both of you.
